CONFERENCE PURPOSE AND THEME
A message from the student organizing committee.
Observation, Cooperation, & Innovation is the official title for the 2nd Vantage One Capstone Conference, which will take place between 18-19 July 2016 at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. All Vantage students from four streams - Arts, Engineering, Management and Science - have been given lessons and firsthand practices on how research is done in an academic community throughout their first year.
Now, this is our opportunity to showcase our research and design projects!
Here are three students’ views about the meaning of this year’s conference themes:
During the one year of research and design curriculum and practices, Vantage One promotes its students to observe new opportunities and challenges along a continuum. In order to make the Vantage One program an innovative experience at UBC, it is essential for Vantage students to cooperate and share knowledge together.
Through observing, both opportunities and challenges emerge. By cooperating, each is amplified and overcome. This process creates innovative minds, and underlines the innovativeness of Vantage College to UBC's community.
The UBC Vantage Capstone Conference 2016 concludes Vantage students' first-year academic experience in UBC. Through courses such as VANT148, VANT149, VANT150 and VANT151, students began to learn theories about research and design at first, promoting them to observe new opportunities and challenges during the learning process. Students then were encouraged to cooperate together to generate their own topics, questions and methods in order for their research and design projects. This cultivates students' creative spirit, leading to an innovative experience.

A WARM WELCOME FROM DR. JOANNE FOX
Dear Vantage student delegates,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Vantage One programs, I am honoured to welcome you to the second annual Vantage College Capstone Conference. At this year’s conference, we are pleased to have over 230 student delegates presenting posters, design projects and research talks. This conference is your event. You and your fellow students have organized the details, worked hard on your projects, and now have this opportunity to share your work with your peers. You have chosen the conference theme, “Observation, Innovation and Cooperation,” and voted for the conference logo. For me, “Observation” has always been an important part of my life as a scientist. As scholars, critically observing the world around us can help us ask and answer meaningful questions. As you listen to presentations and visit posters produced by students in the Arts, Engineering, Management, and Science streams, you too will have opportunities to observe, to ask questions, and to engage in discussions about the answers your peers offer. In addition to observing, this can be your opportunity to embrace the second theme of the conference, “Innovation.” With project topics ranging from studies on the academic stress of international students, Ukraine's sovereignty, the effects of electronic gaming on social bonds, health considerations for student food purchases, to harnessing renewable energy there will definitely be spaces where innovative ideas emerge. I encourage you to reach out to your fellow conference delegates across disciplines to ask questions and add your perspectives. This is where the final theme of the conference, “Cooperation,” becomes so important. As the conference logo suggests, each of you brings a different perspective. You can be an innovative thinker by critically observing the world around you and by adding your own perspective to the perspective of others. Finally, this conference is also a chance for you to reflect on your experiences in the Vantage One program and build on the connections you have made this past year. I am really looking forward to hearing about your experiences and your projects, and seeing the results of your work. Enjoy the conference!
Sincerely,
Dr. Joanne Fox
