tHIRD vANTAGE oNE CAPSTONE CONFERENCE
cONFERENCE PURPOSE AND THEME
During the one-year’s extensive training through designed curriculum and practices, the Vantage One program offers itself as an excellent opportunity for its students to explore new areas in life, to step out one’s comfort zone and expose oneself to the uncertainties, challenge oneself to the unknown. Throughout the wonderful Vantage journey, the Vantage faculty encourages these freshmen to look at things with new perspectives, progressing through their hard-work and cooperation, and create things they would have never considered possible.
The UBC Vantage Capstone Conference 2017 concludes Vantage students’ first-year UBC experiences both in their daily living and academic sphere. It provides a platform for the students to present their accumulation of knowledge and growth, as both individuals and groups. This conference not only reflects Vantage students’ academic achievements throughout the year but also demonstrates their unique interpretations and applications of Creating, Exploring and Sharing.

A Warm welcome from Dr. joanne fox
Dear Vantage student delegates,
On behalf of your fellow Vantage students, and the faculty and staff of the Vantage One programs, I am honoured to welcome you to the third annual Vantage College Capstone Conference. At this year’s conference, we are pleased to host close to 300 student delegates presenting posters, design projects and research talks at Orchard Commons. This conference is your event. You and your fellow students have organized the details, worked hard on your projects, and now have this opportunity to share your work with your peers. You have chosen the conference theme of, “CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO THE UNKNOWN: Creating, Exploring & Sharing.” Being curious and open to learning is one way to shine light into what is unknown in the world and is certainly a way that you can challenge yourself. With your research and design projects, you have had the opportunity to build upon, create, and explore further what you’ve learned in your classes in the Vantage One program. As scholars, you can use your skills and insights gained by exploring the unknown to ask meaningful questions. As the conference theme suggests, you will have the most impact if you focus on both creating new knowledge and sharing your findings. The capstone conference offers you the opportunity to share your own work and to explore the work of others. As you listen to presentations and visit posters produced by students in the Arts, Engineering, Management, and Science streams, you will have opportunities to explore other disciplines, to ask questions, and to engage in discussions about the answers your peers offer. With project topics ranging from studies on how student well being is influenced by exams, physical analysis of parkour motions, how text messaging affects literacy, renewable energy, health literacy, comic books, video games, and how international students cope with culture shock, there will be many things that you can relate to. You will also find that many projects will be in new areas for you. This offers you additional opportunities to challenge yourself to the unknown. I challenge you to reach out to your fellow conference delegates across disciplines to ask questions and add your own perspective to the perspective of others. Finally, this conference is also a chance for you to reflect on your experiences in the Vantage One program and build on the connections you have made this past year. I admire the many ways in which you have challenged yourself! I am really looking forward to hearing about your experiences and your projects, and seeing the results of your work. Enjoy the conference!
Sincerely,
