The potential benefits of doing exercise which are known by most of people are lower body weight, lower blood pressure, reducing academic pressure and even longer lifer expectancy (Bouchar et al., 1988). However, data shows that obesity has influenced negatively to 17% of children and adolescents and this number are increasing three times in several decades (“How many people are affected by/at risk for obesity & overweight?”, n.d.). The purpose of this research is to examine the barriers that lie on the road of doing exercise. 25 participants in Vantage College did two surveys which included beneficial knowledge and open ended questions. The factors like bad weather; study pressure and bad mood are the three main reasons reported by most of students. The implication of this research is to conduct a result that can be used for further study which aims to International group to improve their frequency of doing exercise.

What language would international students choose to take notes in, English or their first language?7/3/2017 July 17th 2:30-2:45 pm Room 3004 For international students, note taking is an important part of studying in university. Thus, it is important for international students to take notes efficiently in class to ensure the efficiency of studying. Language choice of note taking is one way to help international students. Some research showed that do things in way people is proficient can enhance the efficiency. So, it might be a good way that international students to use their first language to take notes. However, there are reports pointed out that translation errors occur when there are background difference and knowledge difference, so, it is probably hard for international students to translate the content they learn in class from English to their first language within such urgent time. So, my research is to find out the balance point of language choice of note taking in class.
July 18th 9:00-11:00 am Orchard Event Space (Room 1116) This research is focused on the premise that the use of cell phone is a disruptive apparatus for university students. Based on previous studies, using cell phone poses both positive and negative impacts on people. In this regard, this research explores how the utilization of cell phone including kinds of applications, Internet using and text messaging influences the literacy levels of sampled students. During this process, both qualitative and quantitative techniques are applied in order to illustrate the negative effect of inappropriate cell phone using among university students. By analysing the data obtained from the survey of participants, it can be concluded that most participants have cell phones with a high using frequency during daily time. Among these participants, male has more probability of conducting in-class text messaging than female. In addition, most participants believe that intemperately using cell phone will negatively impact their literacy levels.
July 18th 12:00-1:45 pm Vantage Commons In this research, we highlight the importance of social support in the aspect of the negative influences brought by the terrorist attacks. There is a close relationship between social support and mental health (Siri, Tine, Tore & Grete, 2013). Wars and terrorist attacks will bring stress to individuals, especially those who have experienced it firsthand. For them, there is a large possibility of suffering from significant distress or functional impairment (Amy, Linda & Toni, 2006). In our study, we randomly chose 20 participants in Vant 149 classes to help us to complete our survey. Results indicate that most students will be psychologically influenced by the terrorist attacks, including those that did not directly experience it. Therefore, we are hoping psychological care provided by mental-health counselor on campus can be provided for students who have been negatively influenced by the attacks.
July 18th 9:00-11:00 am Orchard Event Space (Room 1116) Optimal health requires the appropriate quality and duration of nightly sleep (Watson et al., 2015). Many researchers have paid attention to the influence of sleep or stress upon health problems as well as the relationship between gender and stress (Alimirzae, Forouzi, Abazaki & Haghdoost, 2014; McKnight-Eily et al., 2011; Murberg & Bru, 2004). However, the relationship among those three variables together—stress, sleep quality and gender—has not been examined. In our study, we collect data using a random sample of 4 females and 4 males in the Vantage Arts stream by doing online closed-ended surveys about stress and sleep quality, and then qualitative interviews to learn more deeply about their experiences with sleep and stress. We hypothesize that stress influences sleep quality differently based on gender. Our finding suggests that enriching one’s leisure time could have a positive influence on stress and sleep quality. Future researcher on this topic should consider the impact of gender.
July 18th 12:00-1:45 pm Vantage Commons Other race effect is people have more accurate memory on own-race faces, and less accurate on other-race faces (Meissner & Brigham, 2001). It has close relationship with people sense of ingroup, especially due to globalization, the communication among races is increasing. Many researchers have turned their attention to people other race effect on single race group. However, they focused less on mixed-race group. In this study, we examined Asian’s other race effect on Eurasian faces. 29 Asian participants were asked to memorize 3 set of photos which are Asian and other racial (European and Eurasian) faces respectively. After that they need to find these faces from 30 photos. Through comparing their accuracy on these racial faces, the results showed that Asian have higher accuracy on memorizing mixed-race faces than other racial faces. This finding suggested that people have better ability on memorizing faces with features similar to people around them.

July 18th 12:00-1:45 pm Vantage Commons The quantity of post-secondary students studying abroad is rising rapidly (Chang, 2012). Accurate investigations of anxiety among international students have practical value for psychological scholars and educators. The results may provide opportunities for enhancement of psychological counseling programs in university. Previous research exposed that mental issues caused by anxiety among students have become a significant factor affecting students’ health, and that anxiety comes from nervousness in social situations and academic pressures. However, this research only focuses on sources of anxiety among domestic students but ignores international students. Furthermore, there has been no comprehensive consideration of the factors contributing to anxiety formation. My study adopts Zung’s (1974) Statistical Anxiety Scale (SAS) to quantify participants’ degree of anxiety, as well as survey questions to measures causes of anxiety formation among international students. Preliminary findings suggest that international students’ anxiety mainly comes from their social relations.
July 17th 2:10-2:25 pm Room 3004 Choosing a major is one of the most important events for university students. This decision plays an important role in shaping their future. Faced with various options, students are likely to need to consider a lot of factors. The purpose of this research is to investigate the important factors influencing Vantage Arts student’s major choosing after 1-year of study. Existing studies on decision making mainly emphasize the external (e.g., past experience, cognitive bias, escalation of commitment, individual belief in personal relevance) and internal (neurotransmitters and the brain) aspects that influence decision making. This study uses the survey method to collect information from 30 current Vantage College Art Students about their study experiences and intentions for choosing a major. Findings show that Vantage College Arts students are mainly influenced by peers and Vantage College Arts program fixed courses, which implicates students to consider more critically what influences their daily lives.
July 17th 1:30-1:45 pm Room 3004 In the Vantage College, the intensive timetables cause some psychological problems, like the growth of the stress level. Our study aim to explore the effect of time management on stress level and find the way of reducing students’ stress. Previous researches have focused on studying the correlation between time management and stress, but few of them relate time management and stress in a causal relationship and regard time management as an independent variable. In this research, we recruited 50 participants and used survey to investigate time spend on four major daily activities (sleeping, eating, studying and entertainment) and stress level. The major finding shows that students with different time management perceive different levels of stress while studying at Vantage College. The implication of this study is to provide supports and suggestions for administrations to lay down more rational timetables.
July 18th 9:00-11:00 am Orchard Event Space (Room 1116) The world of online gaming has exploded in popularity in recent years. It is important to study on the discrimination perception of college students who enjoying online gaming in this new massive and unprecedented environment. Some scholars have found significant levels of racial and gender-based discrimination in online worlds (Ratan et al., 2012; Nakamura, 2009). In this regard, we desire to continue on multi-aspects of discrimination in online gaming base on the limitation of former study. The present study is done by getting regular players to fill out a detailed survey questionnaire with questions about the frequency and nature of online discrimination. We expect that results will show a common perception of significant discrimination, which implies that these new online spaces require stricter standards for monitoring and addressing such behavior.
