ORCHARD COMMONS
ORCHARD COMMONS
A WARM WELCOME from dr. joanne Fox
Dear Vantage student delegates,
On behalf of your fellow Vantage students, and the faculty and staff of the Vantage One programs, I am honored to welcome you to the fifth annual Vantage College Capstone Conference.
At this year’s conference, we are pleased to host over 400 student delegates presenting posters, design projects and research talks at Orchard Commons. This conference is your event. You have worked hard on your projects, and now have this opportunity to share your work with your peers.
This year’s conference theme is, “Stepping out and Inspire.” Stepping outside your comfort zone and presenting your work at this conference is one way that you challenge yourself and enrich your own learning. The capstone conference offers you the opportunity to share your own work and to explore the work of others. This can be very inspiring!
As you listen to presentations and visit posters produced by students in the Vantage One Arts, Engineering, Management, and Science programs, you will have opportunities to explore other disciplines, to ask questions, and to engage in discussions about the answers your peers offer. This conference is full of exciting opportunities and you will be able to fully participate in a first-year academic conference, which is a chance not every first-year student gets.
With project topics ranging from studies on links between exercise, culture and stress levels, the use of e-textbooks, analysis of zooplankton in the oceans in Vancouver, to creative solutions for designing energy recovery clothes dryers, there will be many things that you can relate to. You will also find that many projects will be in new areas for you. These innovative research projects will broaden your understanding of how research works within other disciplines and give you a greater understanding of how the world works outside of your chosen field of study.
Finally, this conference is a chance for you to reflect on your experiences in the Vantage One program and build on the connections you have made this past year. I admire the many ways in which you have challenged yourself! I am really looking forward to hearing about your experiences.
Enjoy the conference!
Sincerely,
Dr. Joanne Fox
